2.6 Fly and record a plan

Start flight mode

After preparing the flight plan, start flight mode at the appropriate point in the preflight or departure sequence.

1. Select Fly while preparing the aircraft.
2. At the appropriate time, select Departure at the top of En Route. AvPlan records the actual departure time in bold at the first waypoint of the stage.

Selecting Departure also changes the plan to Fly mode if required.

The active flight plan becomes an electronic flight log. A TO row appears between the previous and next waypoints and displays live GPS-derived information. As each waypoint is passed, the row advances and AvPlan records the actual time of arrival in bold.

When Waypoint Auto Sequencing is enabled under Settings > User Settings, AvPlan can start the flight automatically after the aircraft climbs 100 ft and travels more than 3 NM from the departure airport. The recorded departure time may be less precise than a manual entry.

• Select Previous Leg or Next Leg to correct the active leg.
• Select an airport name in the flight plan table to open its Terminal information.
• After landing and parking, select Plan to record the on-blocks time and stop track logging.
• Select Close Plan to return the plan to Stored Plans.

Before flight, connect each primary and backup device to the internet and open AvPlan EFB so it can confirm that its navigation data and charts are current. AvPlan EFB does not operate after it detects expired data. Include this check in the preflight procedure and see Data downloads.

Startup, Taxi and Takeoff, Cruise and Arrival

• After starting your engine and waiting the for temperatures and pressures to stabilize, set the app to Fly mode Plan/Fly Toggle. This will log your Off Blocks time and begin logging your aircraft’s track.

• At the moment of your choosing (it may differ between VFR and IFR pilots), tap the Departure button along the top of the En Route or Terminal panes. This will log your actual Departure time, and will be displayed in bold within the first waypoint of your flight plan stage.

Note: Tapping the Departure button will also set the plan to Fly mode if it hasn’t already been set.

• Now your flight plan is active, and your flight plan effectively becomes an electronic flight log.

• You will notice a TO row entered between your previous and next waypoints within the list. This row contains live GPS derived data updated every second, and you can easily compare between planned versus actual performance. If actual enroute winds turn out to be vastly different from those predicted in the Area Forecast(s), you’ll be able to spot it quickly and easily. The flight log now becomes a powerful decision making tool.

  In this example, the aircraft is performing better than planned, so it is expected to arrive at the next waypoint two minutes early (0417 versus 0419).

• If you are busy during startup and taxi, and you don’t get a chance to tap Fly or Departure, AvPlan EFB will do those steps for you when you achieve a GS > ~40Kts, climb ~200 feet above and depart beyond ~2 NM of your departure airport. The Departure time noted may not be quite as accurate as when the pilot taps the Departure button at the correct moment, but at least it will be close.

  • Note: This automatic departure feature requires two settings within Settings > User Settings to be in place:
    • Waypoint auto sequencing must be ticked
    • Disable moving map mode must be un-ticked
  • Also Note that automatic departure may not work if your departure speed is low, or you don’t climb fast enough for the climb to be recognised. This could apply to helicopter flights in particular.

• Each time you pass a waypoint within the flight plan/log, the TO field will move down the list of waypoints accordingly.

• When moving from one leg to the next, your Actual Time of Arrival (ATA) is logged. ( After you have passed a waypoint you can edit the ATA value if required).

• If you are unhappy with the auto-sequencing, you can use the Previous Leg or Next Leg buttons as many times as necessary to manually cycle through to the correct leg.

• Tapping the name field (large white box on left edge of the flight plan table) of an airport within your flight plan is a handy shortcut to the Terminal pane information about that place.

• AvPlan EFB will automatically sense when you land. Once you’ve taxied back to the parking area and shut off the engine, tap the Plan button. This will log your On Blocks time and cease track logging.

Cancelling and Changing SARTIME

If you have been flying under the VFR with a SARTIME you must not forget to cancel it after landing.

AvPlan helps you deal with SARTIME in two ways; first of all, if you have submitted a SARTIME it will have been added to your calendar with a reminder to cancel. Secondly, in order to cancel SARTIME with minimal effort, you can tap on Planning>SARTIME to reveal the SARTIME associated with your plan. A list of SARTIMEs associated with your currently active (successfully filed, not-yet cancelled) flight plans will be displayed. Click on the SARTIME that you wish to change or cancel, to be presented with options to cancel or change it.

• You can change the selected SARTIME to some later or earlier time if, for example, you took off at a time significantly before or after the the ETD in your plan. Type in the new date-time group and tap the screen. Change via app is the default method. Unless you tap Change via Voice AvPlan will automatically submit the change.

• If you prefer to change a SARTIME by phone, tap on the Change via Voice button. Now, changing the SARTIME value will not send a changed value to NAIPS- AvPlan retains the changed time, but does not submit it. AvPlan assumes that will make the phone call.

• You can cancel the selected SARTIME by tapping the Cancel button and confirming. AvPlan will cancel the SARTIME for you, and display a confirmation message when succesful, or if you have nominated to change by Voice, it will delete the active SARTIME internally but it will not cancel the SARTIME in NAIPS.

Note. If you elect to cancel by Voice, but do not in fact make the phone call, AvPlan will no longer show the active SARTIME, even if you have not cancelled it. This is not recommended as it may lead to confusion.

If you were flying under the IFR you will have canceled SARWATCH with ATC in the circuit or on the ground, or it will have been cancelled for you by a tower controller. AvPlan does not cancel SARWATCH.

Log a flight

1. Open Planning > Log Flight.
2. Review the flight date, aircraft, departure, destination and total flight time.
3. For each stage, review the off-blocks, on-blocks, wheels-off, wheels-on and flight times.
4. If required, send the record to LogTen Pro.
5. Select Back to return the plan to Stored Plans.

The off-blocks and on-blocks times are recorded when the plan changes between Plan and Fly. Wheels-off and wheels-on times are recorded from the aircraft's movement and height.

You can also save or print the completed navigation log from Reports and printing. It can include recorded arrival times and actual fuel-on-board values entered under Terminal > Leg Details.

LogTen Pro is a separate product. The available guidance identifies it as the electronic logbook supported directly by AvPlan EFB.
