5.7 Charts and plates
Open the documents associated with an airport, then use the available chart tools to annotate, print or place a georeferenced chart on the map.
Open a chart or plate
Chart availability depends on the selected airport, installed data and subscription.
- Open Terminal and select the required airport.
- Select Select Charts in the Terminal toolbar.
- Choose the required ERSA, DAP, AIP, runway-distance, apron, arrival, departure or approach document.
- Swipe left or right to move through the available documents.
Select the chart list again when you want to jump directly to another document.
Use ActivePlates
ActivePlates requires a Premium subscription for Australia or New Zealand and AvPlan EFB 10.0 or later on Apple.
WARNING
ActivePlates is a situational-awareness aid. Continue to use the published procedure and approved navigation equipment.
- Open Settings > Subscriptions and confirm that your Premium subscription appears under My Subscriptions. If it is missing, follow Manage subscriptions.
- Open the airport in Terminal, select Select Charts and choose the required RNP approach plate.
- Open the plate options and check that Active Plates is ticked.
Check whether the selected plate supports ActivePlates:
- ActivePlate Available: ActivePlates is available and enabled for this plate.
- ActivePlate Disabled: enable Active Plates in the plate options.
- ActivePlate N/A: ActivePlates is unavailable for the selected plate.
ActivePlates adds live situational information to supported RNP approach plates in Terminal. To overlay a georeferenced chart in En Route, use Show chart on map. The ActivePlates status and georeferencing status describe different capabilities.
The live strip can show:
- the aircraft’s groundspeed
- the required rate of descent
- the required altitude
- the surface wind.
The plate can also show aircraft position on the vertical profile, the applicable MSA sector and the inbound holding course when that information is available.
If the expected approach information is still missing after checking your subscription and Active Plates, contact AvPlan support with the airport, exact approach name, app version and displayed status.
Read runway circuit directions
On georeferenced airport diagrams, green curved arrows show the left or right circuit direction for each runway end where circuit information is available. Each arrow curves towards the runway to illustrate the turn onto final.
- Open the airport in Terminal, select Select Charts and choose its airport diagram.
- Open the plate options and check that Active Plates is ticked.
- Read the green arrows beside the runway ends. To see the same indicators in En Route, show the chart on the map.
The indicators update automatically using the current time and civil twilight times at the airport:
- During the day, arrows show the normal circuit direction, including for unlit runways.
- At night, arrows appear only for runway ends with lighting information, including pilot-activated lighting. Arrows for unlit runway ends are hidden.
- Where a separate night circuit direction is available, the arrow changes to that direction at night. Otherwise, it keeps the normal circuit direction.
An arrow may be absent when circuit information is unavailable.
WARNING
Circuit arrows do not confirm which runway is currently in use or that runway lighting is operating. Before selecting a runway or joining the circuit, check the published aerodrome procedures, NOTAMs, weather and current traffic or ATC instructions.
Use chart tools
- Select Weather to show the available weather information with the chart.
- Select Favorite Chart to add or remove the current chart from favourites.
- Select Annotate Chart to draw, highlight or add text. Select Done when finished.
- Select Clear Chart to remove saved annotations from the current chart.
Annotations remain attached to the chart until cleared. Review them when a chart is replaced, because a changed chart layout may place an existing annotation over different content.
Show chart on map
Only georeferenced documents can be placed on the map.
Georeferenced instrument approaches are included with Premium subscriptions for Australia and New Zealand. Georeferenced airport diagrams are also available with lower subscription levels, so seeing your position on an airport diagram does not confirm access to instrument approach features.
- Open the required georeferenced plate.
- Open the plate options and select Show chart on map.
- Adjust the overlay opacity in En Route.
- Select Clear when the chart is no longer required.
If the expected approach display or map option is unavailable, check your subscription and the selected plate's status using Use ActivePlates.
Print or export a chart
Open the chart and select the print control in the Terminal toolbar. For a combined document package, use Reports and printing.
