Choose a display mode

AvPlan EFB adjusts the position of the flight plan to suit the device, its orientation and the selected layout.

The flight-plan position changes with the selected iPad display mode or iPhone mode. Simulator mode can simulate flying the active plan for training.

Use a compact Web layout

Use the compact layout when you want more planning information to fit on the screen.

  1. Select Settings > Preferences.
  2. Select Appearance.
  3. Set Compact UI to Enabled.

Set Compact UI to Disabled to restore the standard spacing and text size.

iPad display modes

Landscape mode

In landscape orientation, the flight plan appears to the left of the map. A Fuel column is also shown on 12-inch iPad Pro models.

Portrait mode

In portrait orientation, the flight plan appears above the map. Drag the grey divider to change how much of the flight plan is visible. This layout also displays Fuel and Remarks columns.

To place the flight plan below the map, open Settings > User Settings and enable Display Flight Plan Below Map (Portrait).

Full screen flight plan mode

Open Settings > User Settings and enable Full Screen Flight Plan to place the flight plan on its own tab. This layout also displays Fuel and Remarks columns.

iPhone display mode

Apple

AvPlan EFB uses a full-screen flight-plan layout on iPhone. Weather, Text and Settings are grouped under More, and En Route is named Maps.

Use All Flights to create a new flight plan. To control the active leg, use the arrow buttons on the Flight Plan tab.

The smaller screen does not provide Synthetic Vision, HSI, Profile View, Brightness Control, Fade to Black, Notepad, map annotation or procedure-plate overlays. Locate Point and Direct To are also unavailable. Use the searchable list under Terminal to find an airport or navaid.

Dark / Night mode

AvPlan EFB is compatible with the iPad ‘Smart Invert Colour’ mode.

This is ideal for night operations where most text colours are inverted. Items where the colours are important (VFR maps, METAR icons, Synthetic Vision etc) remain their normal colour however.

To enable Smart Invert Colours:

  1. Open the iPad’s Settings app
  2. Tap General > Accessibility > Display Accomodations > Invert Colours > Smart Invert.

It is also possible, and recommended, to change your iPad settings to enable a triple-click of the Home button (or a triple-click of the Top button on newer devices) to toggle this display mode on and off. To do this, open the Settings app and tap General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut. Make sure Smart Invert Colours is enabled.

AvPlan can also be set to automatically follow your iOS Dark Mode preferences if so desired.

Dark mode will follow your system setting (Light/Dark) which can be all light, all dark or follow a schedule (for example, having the iPad change from light mode to dark mode at sunset).

By tapping on the brightness button in AvPlan EFB on iPad (or Settings, User Settings, Dark Mode/Light Mode on iPhone) you can also change to always Light mode, or always Dark mode.

If you find some text a bit too small to read easily, help is at hand;

In the iOS Settings app, please scroll down to “Accessibility”, then tap on the second item: “Zoom” and turn it on. Please also read the brief instructions there describing how to use it before leaving the settings app. We also recommend having a good play with AvPlan using this Zoom tool on the ground, before using it in the cockpit. It isn’t difficult, but a few minutes becoming familiar with it on the ground will be well worth the time spent.

The iOS Zoom tool lets you see things that are difficult to read on your screen if and when required, regardless of what app you are running at the time. You can turn the Zoom tool on and off with a simple three fingered double tap, so it is only there when you need it.

Note that from release 9.5 onwards, Traffic data, ALA, Airport and user Waypoint details will enlarge if you zoom in far enough.

Internal Simulator mode

AvPlan 9.7 and up has the ability to simulate flying along a planned route. This allows you to adjust settings and to explore what works best for you while stationary on the ground.

To access this mode you can turn on the Internal Simulator in Map Settings. A Sim button will appear at the top of the En route pane.

To use the Internal Simulator

  • Select a Flight plan that you would like to simulate flying plan and open Or tea e open)
  • Turn on the simulator with the Sim button.
  • Tell AvPlan
    • The location at which you wish to start simulating the flight. This would usually be the departure location in the plan, but you could start from anywhere.
    • The ground speed that you will fly and the multiplier (Time speed) if you want to speed things up for training or demonstration purposes
    • The altitude you want to climb to
    • The vertical speed for the climb
    • The magnetic track that you will fly
  • Tap Start

The Sim button will now turn Red to indicate that AvPlan is now in Internal Simulation mode, and not tracking your real-life position.

Note that the simulator ignores your chosen aircraft performance and ignores real wind data. It just flies according to the parameters chosen above.

You can change AvPlan settings at any time during a simulated flight to see how they impact what you experience as the flight progresses.

If the plan requires a track change between legs, simply tap the Sim button and change the track in the menu… if you type in a value that doesn’t equal the track in the current leg, you will see your aircraft diverge from the planned route.

If you want to simulate a climb to higher altitude or a descent to a lower one, simply change the target altitude. The vertical speed in descent used by the simulator will be the negative of what you have input for the climb.

What the Sim shows

The following functions all work as though you are actually flying, assuming you have enabled them

  • Route annotations (top of climb, top of descent, PNRs and critical points (depending on your subscription level).

  • Frequency change and CTA boundary warnings including audible announcements.

  • HUD

  • Course pointer

  • Distance rings

  • Route markers

  • Rocket boxes

  • Show Aircraft Track

  • Traffic is disabled during simulation- you won’t see traffic even if you have turned traffic on.

Sharing the simulation

If you have a Pro/Premium level subscription you can share the simulated aircraft location with other AvPlan users on the same local network. This might be handy in a classroom situation.The other users must be:

Stopping the Simulation

Tap the Sim button, then tap Stop. This stops the Simulation and turns the Sim button back to being white on dark grey-blue. If you restart the simulation it will restart at the starting location in the menu.
